Two years later .....

... and it's finally finished.

I am really happy with the finished quilt although the back is a bit puckered. Next time I will spend more time getting the layers flat and basted. I hand quilted rows of small stitches down each panel which gives it a lovely crinkled look. I found a plain red doona cover which matched perfectly for the back but I think it was a bit too thin and this didn't help with the puckering. I had trouble mitring the corners as the binding is quite wide but this is my first attempt at quilting so I ended up folding the edges over.

We have just come back from a very busy holiday in Emerald. The kids were kept busy fossiking for sapphires, riding the quad bike and the motorbike, feeding a friend's calf, fishing and surfing in the channel.

A few of these came back to live in our pond.

I managed to stop at 1 op shop on the way up and got these patterns. I have a husband who doesn't like stopping on long road trips. Luckily I was driving when we went through Childers.

Not very good timing on this one considering it is starting to get quite cool in the mornings. I made this skirt using this tutorial. Not sure about the pockets. They are quite big and impossible to iron.

Easter Bunnies

My talented mother has been knitting easter bunnies. I am going to use these for teachers gifts. They are designed to be used on boiled eggs but I'm going to put mine on Easter eggs to give to the teachers. Aren't they cute.

I've been reading a lot of blogs lately and there are lots of posts on recycling clothing. My local op shop had a half price summer sale so I picked up a man's shirt for $2.50. A few alterations and I now have a new skirt. As usual I forgot to take some before shots but it was a large short sleeve button up shirt.

This top pattern is from Burda Magazine 8/2010. The fabric is an embroidered cotton from my stash.

These shorts are also a Burda pattern no:9559. The fabric is from Spotlight.

Happy Australia Day

I missed wishing everybody a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and then there were the terrible floods which affected so many people so it has been a long time since I've posted. Derick's family live in Emerald but luckily are far enough out of town to not be affected. We had planned to spend a couple of weeks with them but unfortunately we couldn't get there. We were also lucky where we live in Brisbane to not be affected by the flood. I can only imagine what those people have been through and are still experiencing. Having not been directly affected the whole thing seems very surreal. I must say today especially I feel very proud to be an Australian.

We have had a few additions to the family over the last week. Two new chickens which will hopefully lay eggs.

Melbourne

Derick and I have just come back from a few days in Melbourne. It was originally a business trip but with Mum and Dad looking after the kids we managed to stay a couple of days extra to have a look around.

This was my first visit to Melbourne and I loved the city with it's hidden arcades and laneways and the architecture. The weather was cool but sunny - a nice change from the humidity in Brisbane.

One day was spent wandering the city visiting beautiful boutiques and I made sure to visit Tessuti - the fabric shop which I have admired online for a long time.

We were lucky enough to check out the night markets which are held at the Queen Victoria Markets up until Christmas. This is a handmade market similar to Brisstyle with the addition of amazing food stalls. Large cups of Sangria were being consumed everywhere you turned and the atmosphere was fantastic.

I will definately visit again.

Bizness Babes & Sarah Blasko

For the last couple of months I have been attending the Bizness Babes training course. I cannot rave about this course enough - it is aimed at mothers who are looking at starting their own business or who already have a business but need some help in running it. The course is run by Samantha Jockel from Biddy Bags and Liana Kabel. Two wonderfully informative ladies who have been a great source of knowledge and support. The course is attended by a group of inspiring women who come from all walks of life.

As a result of attending one of the monthly meetups I was lucky enough to meet Sarah Blasko at the launch of her signature Biddy Bag (Sarah is the patron for Biddy Bags). She was really friendly and lovely to talk to. This photo was taken by the lovely Michelle from Mish photography.

With all the rain around and Derick away for a week Napoleon ended up very matted. Old English Sheepdog's hair is more like wool and you end up with a mass of knots close to the skin if you don't brush them regularly. One of the conditions of getting another OES was that it was Derick's job to do the grooming and as a result of his absence Napoleon was in need of a good clip. When you take all their hair off it is like you are stripping them naked and they get very embarrassed.

Most of Georgie's pj's have consisted of hand me downs from the boys which she doesn't actually mind and will often choose a boys shirt over one of her own. I decided it was time for her to have some girly pj's. She chose some designs - the kitten and pig were done using Ellie's contact screenprinting method and the pics of the kitten were done using some t-shirt transfer paper. I also made three pairs of shorts to go with them. Next time there is pyjama dress up day at school she will have something decent to wear.

I used the same Burda pattern to make Georgie another dress but this one I lengthened a bit. We actually agreed on the same material which came from Kelani. It is double gauze and has cute little mermaids all over it.

It's been a long time since I sewed something for Georgie (and blogged) so when I saw this dress in the June issue of Burda I had to make it.

The material is a beautiful light weight quilting cotton with a striped bias binding. There are other lovely patterns of girls dresses in this issue which I will also make.

Mathilda's Market

This weekend I have a stall at Mathilda's Market where you can see my new summer range. I only managed to get 4 styles sewn for summer and as this week the kids will be home for 2 days I won't have to time to do any more. I've made some more paper boat bunting which was very popular at the Red Hill Fair. There is a choice of storybook pages or sheet music. I still have some winter stock at half price. Derick is away at the moment so I have made the most of being on my own (once the kids go to bed!). I have had a very productive week. I used Ellie's printing teqhnique using contact to do Zac's stormtrooper shirt. If you need some inspiration this site has lot's of free stencils.

This is the top of Georgie's quilt which I started last year. I did more in the last week than I had done in a year!!. I just need to baste all the layers together and then quilt it which I am going to do by hand!! Hopefully it won't take me a year to do the quilting. The kids, the dog and I are heading off to Emerald on Sunday so I am taking it with me. I'm not very good at sitting around watching tv so this will be my night project (not enough room in the car for the sewing machine!!!!).

Napoleon

This was Napoleon 6 months ago when we bought him home. A cute "little" bundle of fluff.

This is a recent photo. Even fluffier but a lot bigger!! He is only 7 months old and unfortunately still acts like a puppy. Poor Georgie is usually sent flying when he's racing around.

Red Hill Fair

Narrelle and I will have a stand at the Red Hill Fair. It is on the 31st July at Woolcock Park, Red Hill. The fair is organised by the Red Hill Kindergarten and has heaps of fun things for the kids. Some of the activities include a trackless train, jumping castle, rock climbing wall, slide, ponies, barnyard animals and clowns. This could be an option if you don't want to spend a fortune at the Ekka.

Weaving workshop

The last workshop we attended at the Bleeding Heart gallery was weaving.

We used natural materials such as palm fronds, rafia and banana stems.

Palm fronds were tied together with rafia.

After twisting a combination of rafia and banana stems around the fronds we ended up with a woven basket. Mine unfortunately does not stand up but if I turn it upside down it resembles a birdcage!!!! It was interesting to see the different shapes that came from the same technique.

Felted Bowl Workshop

Last Wednesday Narrelle, Kim and I attended the felted bowl workshop at the Bleeding Heart Gallery which was run by The Mountain Spinnery. It was so much fun and we walked away with a felted bowl which we had created.

Small sections of wool are placed across and down a piece of round lino resist. Mine resembled a hairy monster through most of the process.

The wool is then wet down and the resist turned over. The edges of wool are then wrapped over the edge of the resist and another layer of wool is added. This process is done until there are 6 layers of wool.

Decorative touches are added by laying strands of wool and silk onto the damp wool.

Detergent, bubble wrap and lots of mucscle and you end up with a felted disc. A hole is then cut into one side and the lino resist is removed.

Our finished bowls. (mine, Narelle's and Kim's) You will notice that mine resembles a brown sea urchin. I couldn't get the hole to stretch enough for me to turn the bowl the right way out. (There was lot's of giggling and comparisons to childbirth during this process) I could cut the hole bigger but I think I will just add some embroidery.

There was such a beautiful range of colour combinations and the finished bowls looked fantastic.

Saviours of the Lost Arts

The Brisbane City Council are running free workshops as part of Saviours of the Lost Arts. Narrelle, Kim and I went to Ellie's screenprinting workshop yesterday. There was a large group of people ready to recreate their designs onto hemp tote bags or in my case a beautiful linen tea towel.

My dandelion design was drawn onto contact which is then cut out using a stanly knife.

Once the design is cut out the contact is placed onto the fabric. Fabric paint is then dabbed on using a stencil brush.

I have done stencilling using freezer paper but the contact gave a much cleaner edge and did not bleed. I already have three requests from my darling children - a stormtrooper, a scooter and a kitten all to be done on t-shirts. It was such a fun afternoon and it was great to have Ellie and Sam there to extend there knowledge on the subject.

The workshops are being held in the Bleeding Heart Gallery which is such an amazing space. We have two more workshops left - felted bowls and weaving - which I am really looking forward to.

I think I am becoming slightly obsessed with vintage patterns. The op shop I visit regularly had some new patterns in which I picked up today.

Georgie made me this little lavendar bag at pre-prep for Mother's Day. She explained that when she was sewing up the side she had to leave a space to put the 'stink' in. It's now hanging in my sewing room
'stinking' up the place.

Treasures

I was given a box of Derick's grandmothers sewing items by my sister-in-law. Some of the treasures inside were beautiful chocolate tins full of buttons, wooden sewing reels, needle books and various attachments for her singer sewing machine which is now on display in my sewing room. I am yet to see if it still works but luckily the instruction booklet was in the box.

My latest op shop finds. A beautifully illustrated children's book full of poems and stories. Scarfs which will be transformed into a skirt and top from the japanese book that I bought at the pop up shop. A print gocco machine which has everything in it. I have often seen prints made from a gocco machine and have always wanted to try it.

Stripe Top

I've just finished my stripe top - the pattern is from Burda Magazine, 4/2009, view 112. I don't usually sew knits and everytime I do I am reminded why! I used my overlocker on most of the seams which was ok but I always have trouble doing the hems. I used a twin needle on the neckline but it just didn't want to work on the sleeves and hem so I ended up doing a small zig zag stitch. This was an easy pattern although I didn't worry about the sleeve bands. Apart from a few problems I am happy with the end result.

I was up early this morning to go to the Kurashi & Youk pop up shop at Nook. I was glad to be there early as I managed to pick up some japanese sewing books and some fabric.

I love Japanese sewing books. The middle book shows you how to transform jumpers, scarves, t shirts and handkerchiefs.

After a relaxing break it is nice to get back to sewing. This has been the first holiday where I actually didn't really do a lot and it was a nice change. With my family back to school and work it is nice to get back behind my machine. With the cool change in the air I sat down today and went through my patterns for some winter clothing ideas. I love winter - I love boots and scarves and layering clothing and this year I am even going to find a nice winter hat or beret. I am quite self conscious about the clothes I wear. I don't like to draw attention to myself which is probably why most of my clothing is black or dark grey. I could never quite bring myself to wear a knitted hat in winter but this year I am going to be more adventurous.

Narrelle and I are going to be at the BrisStyle Mother and Child market on the 8th of May. It will be held at the regular BrisStyle venue - St Augustine's Church Hall and Grounds, Racecourse Road, Hamilton.

We're Back!!

We have arrived home from our trip to Thailand. It was definately a very different experience and the kids had a great time. It was very hot and humid which meant we spent the middle of the day indoors but Pattaya really does come alive at night and the shops and markets are open until about 11pm. As they say a picture says a thousand words so here are some images of our time away.

Home Journal

A friend of mine was given a pile of Home Journals from her grandmother. They date back to the 1950's and each issue contains 3 patterns. They also have knitting patterns, recipes and advice columns.

I have been having a laugh at the letters that have been sent in by people asking for advice. 'Judith' couldn't understand why she wasn't married. She wrote "I am supposed to be attractive and even-tempered, dance well enough to have constant partners, play a reasonable game of tennis and can cook, housekeep and sew."

There are ads for everything from scotch tape (which in the ad is shown taped across a child's forehead to cut their fringe straight) to products to make your baby's hair curly!!. A lot of ads ask you to send in a stamped self addressed envelope so the information can be sent back to you.

Thailand

At the end of the month we are off to Thailand for a family holiday. The kids are very excited and having never left the country it will be an amazing experience for them. My overseas travel is limited to our honeymoon in America so it will be very different for Derick and I as well. Luckily we are going with friends who are regular travellers so all the shopping has been planned.

This is the room we will be staying in at Pattaya. The kids were very excited to see the slippery slide from the top bunk. I'm sure that is going to get a lot of use. When Georgie saw the pictures of the hotel suite she said that she liked our new house. When I explained that it was just where we were staying for holidays she said "Oh, so we have to come back here!" I didn't think our house was that bad but obviously being able to slide out of bed makes all the difference.

Markets this Saturday

With all the kids off to school it has given me 5 days alone to do some sewing but I have volunteered to do extra help at school so I really don't feel like I have a lot of extra time. I have spent the last couple of weeks reassessing my business and what I hope to achieve over the next year. It has been a real eye opener in regards to costing out my clothes. The lovely Ellie has been kind enough to give me some good business advice.

Don't forget Brisstyle Markets this weekend. Hopefully the rain will ease up and the sun will come out and dry up all the rain ..... They are held in the beautiful grounds and hall at St Augustine's Church, Racecourse Road, Hamilton, 6th March 9am - 2pm. I will have summer and winter clothes for sale.

I spent the day in the air conditioning sewing today. It is very quiet during the day with all the kids at school so it is nice to have Napoleon for company. Mind you he spends most of the day sleeping!! He had his first lesson at puppy school on Sunday and was declared the most relaxed puppy.

Garage Sale

Saturday was the annual Bridgeman Downs Baptist Church garage sale. Narrelle, Kim, Natalie and myself were there at 6am with the hundreds of other people ready to find a bargain. Reminiscent of a Myer Stocktake Sale the barricades were lowered and the rush began.

Among my finds were a pair of outdoor chairs;

some Enid Gilchrist books and some sewing patterns;

and 2 sets of scales which are now sitting on my kitchen bench with bright red apples sitting on top;

This photo pretty much sums up the first day of school in our household (although I don't know why Zac has his eyes closed). Zac went up to his classroom without a worry. Georgie was very excited about starting prep but that soon turned to tears when we were in the classroom. Joshuas face says it all. He doesn't like school and he doesn't understand why he can't just stay home and play with his cars! The teacher had to pull him off me while I made a quick getaway. Despite the tears in the morning when I picked him up he was very excited about the prospect of learning to read and was looking forward to going back to school. This morning all that was forgotten and it was back to not wanting to go to school. At least now I only have one drop off point.

Now if only I could get my husband to go back to work ..................

4 weeks old

Today we bought home our new puppy - Napoleon. He is an Old English Sheepdog (think Dulux paint). Our last Old English, Benson, died about 3 years ago and we wanted to wait until
Georgie was a little bit older before we got another dog. We have been waiting since March for a puppy. There are only a few breeders in Queensland and we haven't had much luck -there were either limited numbers of puppies born or the markings were not what we wanted. Napoleon has very similar markings to Benson. He has a white head and one bright blue eye and one dark blue. The kids have been asking for a while for a puppy. We had managed to keep it a secret from them and they were so excited when we bought him home today. He is going to be a much loved addition to our family.

7 weeks

And breathe ......

What a day! We spent the morning at the lagoon at Redcliffe making the most of the nice weather along with everybody else. After lunch we came home for a bit of 'quiet time'. Derick decided it was time to take ducky for a swim in the local creek. Joshua has been against the idea but today we managed to talk him into it. So off we went with Ducky contained in a cat cage. She loved every minute of it. She didn't want to go too far away from us.

Georgie and Josh fell in so Zac 'accidentally' fell in to make them feel better. It all went down hill very, very quickly. Zac fell over and cut his finger on some glass. It was bleeding quite badly so Derick stripped off Georgie's pants and ripped them up for a bandage to try and stop the bleeding. Ducky got 'lost' in amongst the chaos and Joshua started crying because everybody else was. There was an emergency evacuation - ducky was actually close by under a bush and came when she was called. We all jumped in the car - wet and stinky! After a quick shower and a clean up Zac's finger stopped bleeding and only required a bandaid. Georgie is still devastated that her favourite shorts were sacrificed and has asked me to make her a new pair tonight. Joshua is just happy that ducky is home safe and sound and I feel exhausted!

Op shopping

I saw this sideboard at my favourite op shop last week. After I came home I did my usual trick of wishing I had bought it. I went back on Monday and luckily it was still there, but they had put the price up by $21. You expect prices to come down not up. I told the man I had seen it last week at a cheaper price. Another customer had told him it was worth much more so he decided to increase the price. He did however give it to me for the original price. I'm sure my husband wished it had of been sold as it took him 3 trips to find a vehicle it would fit in!!

Library Bags

A friend of mine put in an order for some library bags after she saw Georgie's at kindy. These are going to be Christmas presents for her nieces and nephew. I actually enjoyed doing the embroidery on these bags - it's nice to get away from the sewing machine and do a bit of hand sewing.

A new family has moved in

For the last few years we have watched a couple of noisy miners who return each summer to raise a family. They have used the same mud nest which they made on the drainpipe of our neighbours house. For some reason this year they decided to move and take up residence on the drainpipe outside Georgie's window. They have had 3 babies hatch and it is amazing to watch how fast they grow. It's going to get very cramped in the nest soon and we will be able to watch the mother teach her little ones how to fly.

Market Weekend

Saturday was the BrisStyle market at Hamilton. We had a great day even though the crowds didn't seem to be as big as the July market. Putting the marquee up proved to be a bit of a challenge but in the end we got it up (with a bit of help from our stall neighbours). It was very hot and by the end of the day my feet were black and I couldn't wait to have a shower.

I did some christmas shopping for preschool teachers - pouches from Little Mary Moo - although I am very tempted to keep these for myself. Therese is such a lovely sewer - I am very jealous at how neatly she can put zips in. I try to avoid using them whenever possible.

I also bought these lovely peg magnets from Designs of the Heart. Sarah was our neighbour at the BIDM and made a dash across to the shop to buy icecreams in the afternoon. What a lifesaver - there's nothing better than a chocolate paddlepop to cool you down.

Sunday it was off to Young Designer's market to do it all again. This was the first time Narrelle and I had done this market and we were not sure what to expect. The drop off was probably the easiest I have done and luckily for us our marquee was already up and ready to go. Another hot day although there was a great breeze. Not as busy as I had hoped - I think most people were in the water which is where I wished I was.

So after my market filled weekend I am going to make the most of the last week of school and being child free and relax. Maybe a bit of sewing for myself - because as much as I say I am not going to do any sewing I always do.

We headed into Southbank today to have a swim and cool off. How lucky are we to live in Brisbane. The beaches are close and if you don't feel like surf and sand you can head to Southbank or the Redcliffe lagoon which is another of our favourite destinations. While we were there I took some photos of Georgie wearing my new summer dress which I have now listed in my shop. I have also finally listed my boys plane shorts.

Oliver + S Pattern

This is my first Oliver + S pattern that I have sewn - the jump rope dress. The instructions are really clear to follow. To improve my chances of a dress being worn I chose one with sleeves and asked the princess what colour material she would like. Of course she chose pink.

The gathered skirt makes it perfect for twirling and ballet dancing.

I found this amazing folder of Enid Gilchrist patterns at the Woolloongabba Antique Centre. The previous owner has drafted most of the patterns which are kept safe in plastic sleeves. There is an envelope which has pictures of baby bonnets on it and is labelled 'bonnets for my babies from 1942 onward'. I'm sure I will find lots of inspiration from these patterns.

What a busy few days we have had. Saturday was my birthday. The kids were shipped off to mum's for the weekend and Derick and I went out to lunch and then made a trip into the Finders Keepers Markets. I only wish I didn't have a bored husband hanging around so I could've spent a bit more time there. Most of the stands were really busy so you had to wait to have a look. I bought a rabbit softie kit at Selvedge House for a couple of babies due in the new year. I also tried Ellie's new mirror making machine with some hand stamped linen. Unfortunately I wasn't as prepared as I'd hoped to be for Mathilda's Market so I had to spend Saturday night getting everything ready. As we were childless a nice romantic dinner would have been much better!

Sunday was an early start for Mathilda's Market although we were the last allocated drop off time, and the whole process of unloading was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. The quality of the products available was amazing and there was a steady crowd throughout the day.

After the market we headed straight over to pick up the kids. We had a birthday cake to celebrate Zac's 8th birthday which is today. He has been pestering me to have a party but we surprised him with a trip to Movie World instead.

Narrelle, Kim and I got up early this morning to visit a few garage sales and an op shop. I found some cute children's pillowcases - Winnie the Pooh, Sesame Street and Smurfs. The kids have all picked one they like for a pair of pj shorts. I also bought a beautiful embroidered tablecloth (Kim was kind enough to hand it over to me) and a shirt and top for me.

It was very lonely at the markets on Sunday without Narrelle with me but I was surprised that there were still plenty of people who braved the overcast weather to come and have a look. Of course the rain came down about half an hour before it was time to pack up but luckily I was under cover so had no wet items. The lovely people from Selvedge were across from me so I did manage to have a chat and Ellie was kind enough to watch my stand as well as make a sale for me while I went and got my beer battered chips!! Not only did she make a sale for me but she also has been my best customer so far - Thanks Ellie. Trudi from li'l ludy came to have a chat and gave me some great advice. I have to return the compliments as well - her swimwear is just beautiful!!

Hopefully my fabric which I have been waiting on will be here soon as I have a few new designs which I want to get sewn for Mathildas Market on the 1st of November. I have heard good things about this market so fingers crossed I make some sales. Narrelle and I will also be at the BrisStyle markets on the 5th of December.

Library Bag

Georgie's pre-prep group have started borrowing books this term so they needed to take a library bag. As usual I left it to the last minute and then it was a bit of a rush to get it finished. I used some red drill which I had at home. Add some green ric rac, some vintage flowers and an embroidered name and you end up with one happy customer which is surprising as there is no pink in sight.

I'm going to be at the Boutique Markets this Sunday and this time I am going solo as Narrelle won't be with me. Luckily my darling husband is going to come and help me set up. Joshua is off to mum's for the night so there will only be 2 children to 'help'.

Op Shop Find

This morning while Zac and Georgie were at mum's, Joshua and I did a bit of op shopping. I have been looking for a dolls house for Georgie for a while. I wanted a solid timber one which I could do up myself, not a hot pink plastic one which seems to be the only option if you don't want to spend a lot of money. I was really happy to walk into a local op shop and see this dolls house. It needs a LOT of work but it was only $5.95!!!!! It is quite big and opens in half. It is also on castors so she can move it around. Now my aim is to fix it up while Georgie is at Kindy and give it to her for Christmas.

Dora Strikes Again!!!

Dora is not satisfied with laying in the chook house so she is constantly finding new hiding places inside. Her latest spot has been behind the xbox much to Derick's dissaproval. Today the blanket started moving on the couch and of course underneath was Dora. At least she left a parting gift.

Today I tried a vintage pattern of a girls top that I picked up at the local op shop. Georgie picked out this material from my fabric stash. I bought it a while ago and unfortunately there was only about 80cm left on the roll. It has a beautiful silky feel to it and looks really pretty on her.

School Holidays

As much as I love not having to rush around in the morning getting lunches and uniforms ready and trying to get 3 kids off to school and preschool, my children, especially the boys, are always fighting. It drives me crazy that they can't leave each other alone and do their own thing. So far I have managed to keep them busy as well as shipping Joshua off to mums for the night just to separate them. So it's nice to see them all in the same room without an argument .....

.....it's just a shame that they were asleep!!!!

Nani Iro Skirt

After 3 failed attempts at sewing something for myself I went back to a pattern I have used before (simplicity 7229) to make this skirt. I used the Nani Iro fabric I bought at the beginning of the year. It's hard to see in the picture but this material has a mint green background. Not usually a colour I wear but it is quite light and will look good with a white singlet.

On saturday we drove down to Shorncliffe Pier so I could get some photos of my summer range. It was such a beautiful day - the sky was blue and the water was calm. The kids had a quick swim and a play in the playground.

Very exciting for me!! Miss Haidee was also featured - (that's her beautiful blue spotted dress in the picture). I am looking forward to this Sunday's Boutique markets as I will have my summer range ready including some boys short. It gives me a chance to get some feedback on my clothing which is always helpful.

I have been asked to supply some images for an upcoming newspaper article so this morning I had to do a quick photo shoot of some of my new summer range. The article will appear before the next boutique market and luckily I had some samples made of some new summer items.

The dining room was converted into a makeshift studio.

Georgie went into model mode complete with pout when I asked her to pose for me. Thanks to the promise of lollies she was very well behaved. The next two weeks will be spent frantically making up complete size ranges of each item ready for the markets. Unfortunately I didn't get as much done as I'd hoped while everyone was away.

The toy room downstairs has become my sewing room. We moved the kids toys up to their bedrooms and the TV has gone into my old sewing area upstairs. I can't believe what a difference having a whole room to myself has made. I don't annoy anyone if I want to stay up late sewing and I can leave everything spread out and just shut the door on my mess. I feel like I have my own office which makes me feel a bit more professional. As an added bonus the kids are spending more time in their rooms or upstairs watching TV which means less yelling and screaming downstairs.

Yesterday at the Boutique markets Narrelle finally finished off her scarf which she started at the Stitches and Craft show. She is quite pleased with herself and was very happy to pose for this photo (I know! - I can be very sarcastic some times.) The market was good, we got some great feedback. Narelle has started some new designs which are pesonalised with your child's name - they look fantastic. I am keen to get my summer range sewn up so I will have it to take to the September market.

This weekend was very productive in our house. Lot's of unfinished projects were completed. The boys spent most of Saturday making a go-cart and finished it off today with a coat of paint.

I finished an ice chest that I 'borrowed' from my in-laws verandah in Emerald about 4 years ago. I am going through a stage where I love everything old so I was determined to have it finished. You can't really tell in the photo but it was originally a light blue colour. I applied a coat of milk paint and then distressed it a little. On top is my collection of old bottles which I bought at a church garage sale last weekend.

Also hiding in my shed for the last few years was an old brass bed. I didn't really do much to it - just removed some of the old rust and painted it with a rust preventor. I didn't want it to look too feminine as it's for Josh's room so I left it a bit rough. I am really happy with the end result and now I have somewhere to hide all of the toys as it is quite high off the floor. I made some paper boats to hang off the bed (I've been wanting to do these ever since I saw Kristina's display at the stitches and craft show). They go well with the oars that I picked up at the same church garage sale last year.

Samford Show

We took the kids to the Samford Show on Sunday. It is a much smaller version of the exhibition but just as much fun and great for smaller kids without the huge crowds for them to get lost in. There's rides, sample bags, animals, cars, woodchopping and my favourite dagwood dogs. The only thing missing was the strawberry icecreams.

Chocolate and coffee lovers gathered in their thousands at Portside Wharf on Sunday. Unfortunately the queues were too long to wait for a sample so I had to make do with my beer battered chips.

We weren't used to having this much room so our stall looked a bit empty.

Boutique Markets

Georgie and I went for a drive to Portside Wharf today so that I know where to go for Sunday's market. It was a beautiful morning although a little windy. After a look around we sat down and shared some morning tea at a little cafe. It was a lovely spot and the service was fantastic.

Not only will there be the boutique markets but the Lexus Chocolate and Coffee affair will also be held on Sunday. So if you are a chocolate lover (like me - I hope I don't spend all my profits) and looking for a nice day out come to Portside Wharf and spend the day. If you have small children why not grab some fish and chips and head to the park across the road for lunch and a play.

Last night we went to a friend's 40th Birthday party. The theme of the night was Star Wars. Derick went as Darth Maul and I was Queen Amidala - I made both the costumes. Derick's cape was made up of 8.5 metres of black cotton, his horns were
made of clay (by him) which were glued to a bathing cap. He won the prize for best home made costume which quickly found it's way into my pocket.

I picked up a set of 5 retro kids chairs at the op shop today and stopped in at our local church garage sale and found this old ironing board. I'm not sure what I am going to do with it yet but it was only $5.00 so I couldn't leave it behind.

Georgie's quilt

I am slowly making progress on Georgie's quilt. I ordered a japanese patchwork book last year and I really loved this quilt. Originally her quilt was going to be bright floral fabrics but I changed my mind and have used more subtle colours - raspberry reds, blues, pinks and creams. I have included some plain natural linen patches which I am going to do some embroidery and applique on. As this is my first quilt it has taken me a long time to get my head around how to approach it. The directions in the book (which of course are in japanese) give you the dimensions for the widths of each strip but not the lengths. After lots of sticking and pasting coloured paper onto graph paper I came up with the layout of where I wanted each patch to go. Just because I can't do anything the easy way I changed my mind on which fabrics I was going to use (not before having most of the patches cut out). Now I am sewing each row at a time so I can lay it out and work out where I want each colour to go. This seems to be working better.

So far I have 4 strips done - now I can appreciate how time consuming they are to make and how much work goes into doing a quilt.

I have a new top design in mind which I want to make for the shop. I tested the pattern out today using a pair of pillowcases which I found at a local op shop. It looks really sweet on Georgie - now I just have to find the right fabric for summer.

Ducky is very happy about the fact that our backyard has been turned into a giant swimming pool because of all the rain. I must admit today I have spent a very lazy day reading under the doona. The kids presented me with their homemade mothers day gifts. A handpainted potted plant from Georgie, a pincushion made at school from Joshua and a card from Zac. They were all beautiful and very appropriate gifts. My present from Derick was a Wii Fit (which I had asked for). Now I've just got to use it!!!!

Georgie gave me this rock because she thought it looked like a heart. It was a good chance to try out my new camera which I am really impressed with.

I spent Monday taking photos of my winter range to list online. With some encouragement Georgie will pose for a while but the novelty soon wears off. We kept her going with lollies and the promise of minties after the shoot. She is a good model - the wistful look and sultry pout seem to come naturally to her.

Stitches & Craft Show - Day 2

It was a bit slow again today at the Craft Show but after a sleepless night it was nice to sit and relax. I have been getting some really lovely comments about my clothes. I didn't really have any expectations about this show - my main intention was to get some feedback about my designs and to get some exposure for my online stores. There is still the weekend to come which a few people have said will be a lot busier. In the meantime Narelle and I will be going tomorrow armed with some wool and knitting needles in the hope of teaching ourselves how to knit. We have already had a few offers of help from our fellow crafters in the incubator section and there is always the lincraft craft bar where we can have a lesson.

Zac is a very heavy sleeper and can sleep basically anywhere and through all sorts of noise. Tonight I went in to get something out of his room but he was not in his bed. I just assumed he had gone into our bed but when I went to his wardrobe this is what I found ............

It's Finally Here ...............

I sewed my last stitch at 11.30pm Tuesday night and so with approximately 85 items of clothing and a beautiful collection of Narelle's hand embroidered canvases we headed off to set up our cubicle at the Stitches and Craft Show. We arrived early Wednesday morning and with our safety vests on we proceeded to turn a very plain cube into a cosy home away from home for the next 5 days.

The first day was very quiet but as we are both first timers for this kind of show it was good to get an idea of what goes on without too much pressure. It also gave us a chance to visit the other stalls and have a good look around.

We are in good company in the Incubator - some of our neighbours include oldyarns. reclaimed linens, trishalan designs, little diva, funky friends factory, ink and spindle and red seed studio just to name a few. We are still yet to meet some of the other talented people at the other end of the incubator.

The Easter bunny came and filled baskets with eggs. Zac not being a big chocolate lover discovered that chocolate for breakfast can make you feel quite sick. It didn't stop Georgie which is why she has eaten all her chocolate and it is only Tuesday. The kids enjoyed an easter egg hunt with their cousins and then we came home for a game of golf, bowling and tennis. No unfortunately we haven't started a health kick - we bought a wii on the weekend. It really is a lot of fun. Georgie and Josh have turned into golf sharks and Zac has been the star on the tennis court.

The kids spent the day yesterday decorating their Easter baskets. It was nice to sit with them while they quietly coloured their eggs without any fighting.

The Princess Fairy Ballerina

The countdown is on until holidays and this week is filled with Easter celebrations. Today was Georgie's last day at pre-prep so it was a fancy dress day. With limited time we made do with things she already had. I made this skirt for her when she was a baby. When I asked her what she wanted to dress as for the day she decided on a green dinosaur costume that I had made for the boys. When I suggested she wear her tutu she actually liked this idea (thankfully).
